Jurgen Klopp's men have had an up-and-down start, showing flashes of brilliance going forward but frailty at the back. With Darwin Nunez and Stefan Bajcetic bedding in, it may take time for Liverpool to find their rhythm.

It was a game of two halves for Liverpool as they recovered from an embarrassing start to beat Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield.

Clearly needing a few more wake up calls, the Reds defense obligingly fell asleep again moments later. Philip Billing robbed Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield before teeing up Dominic Solanke to rattle the hosts.

Even keeper Alisson seemed to be nursing a hangover, wildly kicking fresh air outside his box. The Brazilian was relieved when VAR spared his blushes thanks to an offside in the build-up.

Shellshocked Liverpool were all over the place like a gang of teenagers on a skateboard. 

But credit to Liverpool, they finally entered the stadium and started playing. After being given an almighty scare, the hosts found their feet to mount an impressive comeback.

Alexander-Arnold atoned for his early horror show by setting up the equalizer finished off acrobatically by Luis Diaz. Mohamed Salah then fired Liverpool ahead after a controversial penalty award.

Even going down to 10 men after a harsh red card for Alexis Mac Allister couldn't halt Liverpool's revival. After the break, their confidence shone as they zipped passes around and overloaded the Bournemouth defense.

Some silky combination play involving new boys Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez sliced open the Cherries for Diogo Jota to make it 3-1. Alisson then redeemed himself with some saves to deny Bournemouth a late lifeline.

The final half hour highlighted Liverpool's class as they kept their foot firmly on Bournemouth's throat. The Reds sent a statement that they can cure early headaches to overwhelm weaker opponents.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will know tougher tests lie in wait for his still gelling side. But in coming from behind despite the odds, Liverpool showcased the champion's spirit still burns bright at Anfield.

Battling Magpies Give Champions Mighty Scare

Newcastle served notice of their top four credentials with a heroic display against champions Manchester City on Sunday.

Though falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat, the Magpies emerged with their reputations enhanced after pushing City all the way.

Boss Eddie Howe will be proud of how his troops took the game to the hosts at the Etihad. They matched the champions blow for blow, carving out enough chances to earn a deserved point.

City may have edged the win thanks to Julian Alvarez's first half strike, but this felt like a significant statement from rising Newcastle.

Given the spending spree on Tyneside this summer, some predicted the Magpies would crumble under lofty expectations. But Howe has molded a gritty united squad who have started the season strongly.

They laid down an early marker here, proving they won't be the Premier League's punching bag this campaign. Newcastle stood toe-to-toe with City in an enthralling heavyweight clash.

The Magpies were happy to allow City possession, staying organized and striking ruthlessly on the counter attack. Allan Saint-Maximin was a constant menace with his electric pace, while Joelinton added midfield steel.

At the back, Newcastle were defiant against City's star-studded attack. Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar repeatedly foiled raids with perfectly timed tackles and interceptions.

In goal, Nick Pope was a colossus, denying City time and again with top drawer saves. He couldn't be beaten from open play, only undone by Alvarez's instinctive first-time finish.

Going forward, Chris Wood and Miguel Almiron spurned great chances to level after the break as Newcastle turned the screw. Only the fingertips of City keeper Zack Steffen kept them at bay.

As the minutes ticked down, Guardiola's men were left hanging on as the visitors poured forward. But it wasn't to be for the gallant Magpies - the woodwork and Steffen coming to City's rescue.

Howe will take huge heart from this display even in defeat. On this evidence, Newcastle are emerging as serious top four contenders.

With potent new signings Alexander Isak and Sven Botman still to come in, the Magpies have a squad packed with quality. Newcastle sent a real message at the Etihad - forget about us at your peril this season.
