The 86th Edition of the Masters did create headlines for all that happened at the ongoing tournament but the one story that everyone is talking about is Tiger Woods’ sensational return.
The American professional came back with a one-under 71 that went on to lie four shots behind Im Sung-Jae. Since Sungjae carded a superb 5-under 67, he was atop the leaderboard after the first round.
Woods, who was looking for an even-par front nine, had to watch his playing partner Joaquin Niemann hole his second shot from 105 yards. Niemann did so on the Par-4 ninth for an eagle and went on to become the first player to reach the 3-under for the tournament.
However, Niemann wasn’t only playing alongside Woods because there was also a 2005 Open winner in Louis Oosthuizen. He was one-over through nine and then a massive gallery followed the group.
After five straight pars to begin his round, Woods finally got a birdie, although the fifth one would have been a birdie if not for it being nicked and staying out. However, he wasn't the only one to shine as 23-year-old Takumi Kanaya also joined the list.
Kanaya was off to a good start as he managed to make a birdie on each of his first two holes. The Japanese sensation is already creating waves and putting himself in front of someone with a bright future.
On the other hand, Woods managed to hit his tee shot at 180-yards par-36th hole to within 2 feet. The shot not only ended for a birdie but also saw large applause from the crowds who were waiting to see how Woods would channel his comeback.
The shot energised the crowd as the applause did not stop and Woods acknowledged the same with a couple of waves directed toward the crowd. Thanks to the birdie, Woods now sits at 1 for the day and is also tied for second.
Following a horrific car crash that nearly took away his right leg, Woods made a comeback to not only any tournament but to the Masters. With the injury occurring less than 14 months ago, many were concerned about how Woods would take to the stage.
But the famous golfer was calm and composed as he made his way through the crowd in a bright pink golf shirt. He was expressionless and even took several pauses where he closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
Having not played in a tournament for over 17 months, many would have expected something different when Woods entered the course. But, like always, he was in pursuit of a record-breaking sixth green jacket.
‘I had a terrible warm-up session’, said Woods after his day was done at 4:25. He also went on to talk about his Dad’s involvement and how he asked whether or not he accomplished all the tasks that he was supposed to achieve.
As for the crowd’s involvement, Woods said that he was very lucky to have such an opportunity and to be able to play in the Masters and then enjoy a reception of this type. Woods also called the place electric as they always seemed to have a reaction to how Woods played the game.
While Woods’ day began with a par save on the first hole, it ended up with him making a shoot at 71, which clearly tells you that there is more to come from the former Best Male Golfer.
